Warum ist Landschaft schön? Was gilt als Landschaft? Und was nicht? Der Basler Soziologe Lucius Burkhardt hat in den 1980er Jahren unser ästhetisches Empfinden der Landschaft untersucht. Landschaft, so Burkhardt, ist die Summe verschiedener und informationsreicher Phänomene ideologischer Charaktere. «Nicht in der Natur der Dinge, sondern in unserem Kopf ist die Landschaft zu suchen; sie ist ein Konstrukt, das einer Gesellschaft zur Wahrnehmung dient, die nicht mehr direkt vom Boden lebt.» Es ist ein Zeichensystem mit bestimmten Bedeutungen und Aussagen, welches erlernt werden muss. «Der Naive kann Landschaft nicht sehen, denn er hat ihre Sprache nicht gelernt. Die Landschaft ist unsichtbar.»
Auf vier Videospuren sind simultan Videos gelegt, die diverse Nicht-Landschaften zeigen: Baustellen, Autobahnen, Industrieanlagen, Hochhaussiedlungen und Hafenareale. Es ist eine ästhetische Untersuchung der unmittelbaren, urbanen Umgebung.

Why is landscape beautiful? What is considered landscape? And what is not? In the 1980s, the Basel sociologist Lucius Burkhardt analysed our aesthetic perception of landscape. Landscape, according to Burkhardt, is the sum of different and information-rich phenomena of ideological characters. "Landscape is not to be found in the nature of things, but in our heads; it is a construct that serves the perception of a society that no longer lives directly from the land." It is a system of signs with certain meanings and statements that must be learnt. "The naïve cannot see landscape because they have not learnt its language. The landscape is invisible."
Videos showing various non-landscapes are shown simultaneously on four video tracks: Construction sites, motorways, industrial plants, high-rise housing estates and harbour areas. It is an aesthetic investigation of the immediate urban environment.
