Während meines Aufenthalts in Belfast habe ich die Stadt ausgiebig zu Fuß und mit dem Fahrrad erkundet, wie die vorangegangenen Projekte zeigen. Dabei wurde mir klar, wie sehr die Stadt immer noch vom Nordirlandkonflikt geprägt ist.
Mit dem Karfreitagsabkommen von 1998 konnte der bewaffnete Konflikt zwar weitgehend beendet werden, aber seine Ursachen und damit die Spaltung der Gesellschaft bestehen weiter und prägen das Leben großer Teile der Bevölkerung entscheidend mit. Es wurde zwar Frieden erreicht, aber noch keine Einigung zwischen den Konfliktparteien.
Aufgrund des fehlenden gemeinsamen Diskurses findet auch das Erinnern und Gedenken an die Ereignisse und Opfer des Konflikts in jeder Gemeinschaft getrennt statt. Die Interpretation der Vergangenheit variiert je nach Zugehörigkeit und führt daher immer wieder zu Streitigkeiten. Auch gibt es bisher keine offizielle, gemeinsame Gedenkstätte, die alle Gruppen zufrieden stellt.
Während meines Erasmus-Semesters an der Ulster University in Belfast konnte ich an einem Seminar von Prof. Kate Caterall von der University of Texas in Austin zum Thema "CRITICAL DESIGN: A Mnemonic Device for Belfast" teilnehmen, das sich mit der Möglichkeit einer Gedenkstätte für den Nordirlandkonflikt befasste.
Auf der Grundlage dieses Seminars habe ich einen Vorschlag für eine Gedenkstätte entwickelt, die für alle Parteien gleichermaßen zugänglich ist und eine nachhaltige positive Wirkung auf die Menschen in Nordirland haben könnte. Durch Recherchen kam ich zu dem Schluss, dass das Grundproblem in der vorherrschenden ethnisch/religiösen und sozialen Segregation der Bevölkerung liegt und eine Gedenkstätte meiner Meinung nach dieses Problem aufgreifen und möglicherweise versuchen sollte, es zu lösen, indem sie zu einer Annäherung der Konfliktparteien beiträgt, um eine gemeinsame Gesellschaft zu bilden.
Mein Vorschlag für ein solches Denkmal ist ein erweitertes Busliniennetz für den öffentlichen Nahverkehr, das in Form eines Spinnennetzes geführt wird und gezielt die segregierten Gebiete untereinander und mit dem neutralen Süden und der Innenstadt verbindet und so eine mögliche Annäherung ermöglicht. Durch einen optimierten Fahrplan und die vollständige Finanzierung durch den Staat oder Stiftungen (es wird kein Fahrpreis erhoben) ist das Denkmal attraktiv und für jedermann nutzbar, ohne Einschränkung durch politische Gesinnung, wirtschaftliche Stärke oder gar Interesse.
Das Projekt ist noch in Arbeit und noch nicht abgeschlossen.

During my stay in Belfast, I explored the city extensively on foot and by bicycle, as evidenced by the preceding projects. In doing so, I learned how clearly the city is still steeped in the Northern Ireland conflict.
The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 was able to end the armed conflict to a large extent, but the causes of it and thus the division of society still exist and have a decisive influence on the lives of large parts of the population. Peace has been achieved, but not yet an agreement among the conflicting parties.
Due to the lack of communal discourse, the remembrance and commemoration of events and victims of the conflict also takes place separately in each community. The interpretation of the past varies according to affiliation and thus causes recurring disputes. There is also so far no official, common memorial that satisfies all groups.
During my Erasmus semester at Ulster University in Belfast, I was able to attend a seminar by Prof. Kate Caterall of the University of Texas at Austin on 'CRITICAL DESIGN: A Mnemonic Device for Belfast', which looked at the possibility of a memorial to the Northern Ireland conflict.
From this seminar, I developed a proposal for a memorial that would be equally accessible to all parties and could have a lasting positive effect on the people of Northern Ireland. Through research I came to the conclusion that the basic problem lies in the prevailing ethnic/religious and social segregation of the population and in my opinion a memorial should address this problem and possibly try to solve it by contributing to a rapprochement of the conflicting parties in order to form a common society.
My proposal for such a monument is an extended bus line network for public transport, which is run in the form of a spider network, specifically connecting the segregated areas with each other and with the neutral south and city center, thus facilitating a possible rapprochement. Through an optimized timetable and full funding by the state or foundations (no fare is charged), the monument is attractive and usable by everyone, without restriction by political sentiment, economic strength or even interest.
The project is still in process and not yet completed.
