Die Skulptur setzt sich mit dem spezifischen Formenvokabular industrieller Produktionsanlagen auseinander. Die chemische und pharmazeutische Industrie, einst Teil der räumlichen Umgebung Basels, wurde im Zuge der Deindustrialisierung in andere Teile der Welt verlagert – nach Indien und China, wo billigere Arbeitskräfte und weniger strenge Arbeits- und Umweltschutzbestimmungen herrschen. Die Produktion, mit ihrem Lärm, Gestank und den Giftstoffen, ist verschwunden, zurückbleibt Forschung und Verwaltung. Arbeitskräfte haben sich von Blue-Collar- zu White- Collar-Berufen und das Stadtbild von Produktions- und Lagerhallen zu Kunsthäusern, Architekturbüros oder Kletterhallen gewandelt. Funktionsgegenstände wie das Scheddach, der Kran, Schienen oder ein alter Schornstein bleiben aus nostalgischen und ästhetischen Gründen erhalten, doch ihrer ursprünglichen Funktion beraubt, sind sie nur noch Dekoration – leere, Zweck entbundene Objekte.

The sculpture deals with the specific formal vocabulary of industrial production facilities. The chemical and pharmaceutical industries, once part of Basel's spatial environment, were relocated to other parts of the world in the course of deindustrialisation – to India and China, where labour is cheaper and labour and environmental protection regulations are less stringent. Production, with its noise, stench and toxins, has disappeared, leaving behind research and administration. Workers have moved from blue-collar to white-collar jobs, and the cityscape has changed from production halls and warehouses to art galleries, architecture firms and climbing halls. Functional objects such as the shed roof, the crane, rails or an old chimney have been preserved for nostalgic and aesthetic reasons, but deprived of their original function, they are now merely decoration – empty objects stripped of their purpose.
