Die schöne Seele sieht die Realität „dort drüben”, getrennt von ihr durch eine dünne Scheibe ästhetisierenden Glases. Das schöne Ich hier, die verdorbene Welt dort. Die schöne Seele ist eine hegelianische Kategorie, eine Haltung gegenüber der Welt, die für den romantischen Künstler typisch ist – sie hat keine Ahnung, dass sie selbst formal für die Verderbtheit in der Welt, die sie sieht, verantwortlich ist. Der Blick, der das Böse „dort drüben“ sieht, ist böse. Um das Beautiful Soul Syndrome zu überwinden, muss man also erkennen, dass man ein Heuchler ist.

The beautiful soul sees reality «over yonder» separated from her by a thin pane of aestheticizing glass. Beautiful me over here, corrupt world over there. The beautiful soul is a Hegelian category, a stance toward the world that typifies the Romantic artist—she has no inkling that she herself is formally responsible for the corruption in the world that she sees. The gaze that sees evil «over yonder» is evil. So to get over beautiful soul syndrome is to realize that you are a hypocrite.
